TL;DR

Go south from Burgas for the wild version of the Black Sea: Ropotamo's river reserve is doable by bus in a day, while the Strandzha mountains are really a car trip.

Ropotamo: the river, not another old town

Nessebar, Sozopol and Pomorie get the crowds, but the coast south of Sozopol is where Bulgaria turns green and empty. The Ropotamo reserve protects a slow river winding through forest and dunes to the sea, with herons, cormorants and terrapins along the banks. The classic experience is a short boat trip upriver — seasonal, weather-dependent and usually easier to pay for in cash, so don't arrive with only a card.

Getting there without a car

Regional buses leave from Yug (South) station, right beside Burgas railway station; fares to nearby coastal towns run roughly €3–6 and journeys take 20–60 minutes. Take a service heading towards Primorsko or Tsarevo (about an hour) and check the return times before you set off — southbound frequencies drop sharply outside high summer. Strandzha: beautiful, but hire a car

The Strandzha mountains — oak forest, fire-dancing folklore villages, empty beaches near Sinemorets — are the one trip where driving genuinely pays off. Our own rule of thumb: you don't need a car for Burgas itself, only for the villages south of Sozopol and Strandzha. During Eurovision week, parking in Burgas will be difficult, so plan a car for one day, not the whole stay.

Fitting it into contest week
