Burgas is a city on a spit of land between the sea and a ring of wetlands. Two days covers the Sea Garden, the beach, the museums and the pink salt lakes — and the arena quarter sits close enough to walk to from all of them.

Sea Garden

Burgas's defining public space: a long clifftop park laid out in 1910, with a casino building, an open-air summer theatre, sculpture alleys and stairways dropping to the beach. During contest week it is the natural fan meeting ground.

Burgas sits between four wetlands on the Via Pontica bird migration route. Atanasovsko Lake turns pink from salt-loving algae and brine shrimp; you can float in the salt pans and see pelicans and flamingos in the same hour.

What is Burgas best known for?
The Sea Garden — a 1910 clifftop park above the beach — and the ring of salt lakes around the city, including the pink Atanasovsko Lake. Burgas is also the main gateway to the southern Black Sea coast and its old towns.
Why are the lakes near Burgas pink?
Atanasovsko Lake is a hypersaline lagoon. Salt-loving algae and brine shrimp pigment the water pink in high summer, and the same organisms give the local flamingos their colour. The salt pans are also used for mud and brine therapy.
How many days do I need in Burgas?
Two full days covers the Sea Garden, the beach, the archaeological and ethnographic museums and the lakes. Add one day per nearby town — Nessebar, Sozopol or Pomorie — if you are staying for the whole contest week.
Is Burgas walkable?
The centre is very walkable: the station, Aleksandrovska, Bogoridi, the Sea Garden and the beach form a compact loop under 30 minutes end to end. The lakes and outer districts need a bus or a taxi.
