Why Nessebar is the classic trip from Burgas

Nessebar is <cite index="2-1,2-2">an ancient town on a rock peninsula, on the UNESCO World Heritage list for its medieval churches and wooden Revival houses</cite>. It sits 37 km up the coast, which means you can be standing among 12th-century stonework barely an hour after breakfast in Burgas.

The catch is volume. Nessebar is the single most-visited old town on this coast, and by late morning the lanes fill with day-trippers bussed in from the big resorts. The fix is simple: <cite index="2-2">cross the causeway in the early morning before the coach parties arrive</cite>, then have lunch and head back while everyone else is still queuing for souvenir magnets.

Getting there

Regional buses leave from Yug (South) station, right next to Burgas railway station in the centre. <cite index="2-25">Departures to Nessebar, Sunny Beach, Sozopol and Pomorie run from beside the railway station, take 20–60 minutes and cost €3–6</cite>. How long you need

Half a day covers the peninsula: the Church of Christ Pantocrator, the ruined basilicas, the windmill on the causeway and a fish lunch overlooking the water. A full day works if you add the new town's beach or a hop onward to Sunny Beach.
