Why is the sand black?

The first thing visitors notice is the colour. Burgas Central Beach sits directly below the Sea Garden and is made of dark volcanic sand, heavy in iron-bearing minerals. It is not dirt or pollution — it simply heats up faster underfoot on a hot afternoon, so bring flip-flops for the walk down to the water.

Above the beach, the wooden pier known as the Bridge is the city's postcard image and the obvious sunrise stop on your first morning.

Is it good for swimming?

For a city beach, it is unusually good. The water shelves gently, the bay is sheltered, and there is a Blue Flag section with the usual lifeguard and facilities. It is a working port city, so the beach shares the horizon with cranes and tankers — charming at sunset, not what everyone pictures.

Windy days are common on this coast. If the sea is choppy, swap the swim for a float in the salt pans of pink Atanasovsko Lake, where the brine holds you up like the Dead Sea.

Where the golden sand is

If you want classic postcard sand, it's a short bus ride:

• Sunny Beach — 8 km of wide sand, roughly 35 km north, frequent buses.
• Sozopol — two beaches beside a 2,600-year-old old town, ~45 minutes by bus.
• Nessebar — UNESCO churches plus beaches either side of the causeway, ~40 minutes.
