The summer core: June to August
The city's cultural life moves outdoors once the season starts. The Summer Theatre inside the Sea Garden hosts the Emil Chakarov music festival, the international folklore festival and the long-running "Burgas and the Sea" song contest, while the Flora exhibition centre nearby runs shows through the warm months. The sand sculpture festival is the family favourite, usually built over July and August on a new theme each year.
On the night of 30 June into 1 July, the coast celebrates July Morning — people stay up on the beaches to watch the first sunrise of the month. In Burgas the action spreads along the northern beaches towards Atanasovsko Lake.

Autumn and winter
September brings fish-and-wine style harvest events and the end of the open-air programme; the State Opera then carries the indoor season through winter. Contest week in May sits before the beach-festival season, so expect cooler water, thinner crowds and a city focused entirely on the arena, fan village and turquoise carpet. If you want both, come in May and return in July.
