Size and feel
Burgas has about 200,000 people and a centre you can cross on foot in half an hour: the railway station, Aleksandrovska, Bogoridi, the Sea Garden and the beach form one flat loop. Varna is roughly twice the size, with more museums, more nightlife and more sprawl. If you like walking everywhere and paying less for it, Burgas is the easier base.
Beaches and nature
Burgas Central Beach sits directly below the Sea Garden, the clifftop park laid out in 1910, with the wooden pier known as the Bridge as its postcard image. Burgas's real trump card is the ring of salt lakes: Atanasovsko turns pink in high summer, and pelicans and flamingos pass through on the Via Pontica flyway.
Day trips
This is where Burgas pulls ahead. Nessebar (37 km, UNESCO), Sozopol (35 km, founded 610 BC), Pomorie (20 km, salt and wine) and Sunny Beach (35 km) are all reachable by public bus in under an hour, from the Yug station beside the railway station, for roughly €3–6. Getting there — and Eurovision
Burgas Airport (BOJ) is 10 km out at Sarafovo, about 20 minutes by bus (~€1) or €10–15 by taxi. Varna Airport (VAR) is a useful fallback: around two hours by coach for €10–15. For contest week, though, staying in Varna means a four-hour round trip on show nights.

- Generally yes. Burgas is smaller and less resort-driven, so accommodation and eating out tend to cost less — though Eurovision 2027 week will push prices up citywide.
- Can I do a day trip from Burgas to Varna?
- It's possible but long: intercity coaches take about two hours each way. Nessebar, Sozopol or Pomorie make far better use of a day from Burgas.
- Which airport should I fly into for Eurovision 2027?
- Burgas (BOJ) first. Varna (VAR) and Sofia (SOF) are the fallbacks if BOJ flights are full or expensive — Sofia is 6–7 hours by bus or a one-hour domestic hop.
