IsSeptemberaGoodTimetoVisitBurgas?
Yes — September is arguably the best month in Burgas. The Black Sea stays warm well after the August crowds thin out, hotel rates drop, and the old towns of Nessebar and Sozopol are walkable again without coach parties. Days are still beach-warm, evenings need a light layer, and Burgas Airport still has summer flights.

TL;DR
September gives you August's warm sea with half the crowds and lower prices — the smartest month to see Burgas and the southern coast.
Why September works
The Black Sea holds its summer heat into autumn, so swimming off Burgas Central Beach — dark volcanic sand directly below the Sea Garden, with the wooden pier known as the Bridge reaching over the water — is still very much on. What changes is the pressure: fewer sunbeds, easier restaurant tables, and rooms at shoulder-season rates rather than peak-August ones. Pack a light jacket for evenings and expect the odd rain day later in the month.
The Sea Garden, laid out in 1910 along the clifftop, is at its best in September light — sculpture alleys, the open-air theatre and stairways down to the sand. The salt lakes ringing the city are also still in play: Atanasovsko Lake sits on the Via Pontica flyway, so early autumn is prime bird-migration season, with pelicans and flamingos over the pink salt pans.
Day trips are actually pleasant
This is the month to cross the causeway into Nessebar (37 km, UNESCO old town, ~40 minutes by bus) or wander Sozopol (35 km, founded as Apollonia Pontica in 610 BC) without shuffling through crowds. Regional buses leave from Yug station beside the railway station for roughly €3–6. See the full list on our day trips guide.
Money and practicalities
Bulgaria uses the euro (adopted 1 January 2026). A mehana main course runs about €8–13, a full dinner with drinks €20–30, and a bakery banitsa breakfast under €3. City buses cost around €0.80; the centre is walkable end to end in 30 minutes.

Questions
- Can you still swim in Burgas in September?
- Yes. The Black Sea retains its summer warmth into early autumn, and Burgas Central Beach below the Sea Garden stays swimmable for most of the month, though beach services start winding down towards October.
- Is September cheaper than August in Burgas?
- Generally yes. Accommodation on the Bulgarian coast drops from peak-summer rates once the August school holidays end, and flights into Burgas Airport (BOJ) usually ease too, while seasonal routes still operate.
- What is there to do in Burgas if it rains in September?
- The city centre has the archaeological and ethnographic museums, covered market halls, cafés along Bogoridi and Aleksandrovska, and wine bars such as Ti Bar. Pomorie's salt museum, 20 km away, is another indoor option.
